I'm new here but I've been in RI for a while. This is a great site. Glad I found it. This new law covers all years. As it was explained to me by an inspector at  DMV, this law pertains to any triler rated for 1000 lb or more new or old. She told me that I had to get the vin # verified by the police then get the trailer inspected before I could register it. She had no clue who was authorized to do the inspection so I still havent gotten that done. She also told me the inspection is yearly. This is not right at all. I can see the need for inspection but 1000 lbs is too low of a starting point. As I understand it this law was put on the books to keep unsafe utility and heavy trailers up to date with safety issues. It is also suppost to cover old worn out trailers and get them off the road. My issue is not the inspection its the yearly cost and hassle. Hope this helps. Anyone know where I can get the trailer inspected near Cumberland? Thanks - GAMA_BAIT

Not sure about CT John.

There's one thing that i don't agree with about this new law... and that is i have to get my trailer inspected but some guy can to home depot and buy one of those cheap trailers, load it up with lawn mowers and be exempt from this law! Just because it's not rated for a 1000 lbs!

Thats just not right   >:(

I have been all over the RI DMV site and made multiple calls to the Pawtucket registry (always busy) and still can’t find out anything about this trailer inspection law. I need to get my trailer inspected but I can’t find anyone in Northern RI that can do it for me. Anyone know a certified garage that has the right paper work and stickers, preferably in the Cumberland area?

Any idea who I can write, E-mail, and or call to complain about this law. If we all band together maybe we can get this changed, at least for boaters. I can see the need for safety but the way they have it set up makes it very hard to comply.

Why every year?

Also as previously mentioned what about the guy with his overloaded utility trailer screaming down RT 95 going 80 mph with the trailer swaying to and fro and a nice healthy bend in the axle from all the weight? He’s legal but we aren’t? I have seen some boat trailers on the road that should not have been there but I have seen many more homemade and utility trailers that were not safe to be used or were severely overloaded.

Any help with this is appreciated. – GAMA_BAIT

What is the weight rating for your trailer? It is only for trailers over 1000lb GVW. Maybe if your trailer is brand new it passes for free the first time? I got the renewal form for my 14ft trailer rated for 1250lbs last year but no notice for inspection. I can't even find a human to ask. The help desk is automated and makes no reference to trailer registration / inspection and I have yet to get thru with out getting kicked out by a busy signal. It is very frustrating. - GAMA_BAIT

DEP doesn't get involved with trailers that is DMV's deal. DEP was no help on this issue as its not under there control.

I just got of the phone with RI registry, Safety and Emision control (401-222-3886). Trailers with a GVW over 1000 lbs do have to be inspected yearly. A new trailer gets a one year grace period. Trailers must be inspected  by June 30th. I aked for inspection locations and she read me off a list of locations based on my residence. The cost of inspection is 11.00.
note: Authorized motor vehicle inspection locations are not trailer inspection locations.
