The Hawg Forum / Suprises in Maine
« on: September 18, 2020, 09:25:44 AM »
Just got back from a trip to Maine. It was tough fishing due to Fall turnover and low lake levels from a dam repair on the lake. I did run into Ryan from Maine Cabin Masters which was kinda cool.

The Hawg Forum / Been a while

It's been about a month since I've been able to fish out of my canoe (hurt back). Took a short trip to one of my out of the way spots for a few hours this morning and it paid off.

The Hawg Forum / Listen to the fish, score
« on: August 16, 2020, 10:16:45 AM »
Fished a small pond that I have decades of history on, and after 1 1/2 hrs of fishing history I only had two small fish. I decided to hit one spot that I usually don't have much luck on but the wind was blowing in there so I gave it a shot on my way out. The fish were stacked and I landed several quality fish in just 2 to 3 fow, slow rolling a spinner above the grass. My best 5 went 15 lbs give or take a couple ounces. I guess you just have to listen to the fish.

The Hawg Forum / New pond, so-so
« on: August 15, 2020, 02:50:17 PM »
Fished a "new" pond with my dad today and it was so-so. we only caught 10 bass but no big ones. The thing shocked me the most was that there was no grass anywhere in the pond just lilies. Slab crappies though. Might try it again next Spring.

The Hawg Forum / The good, the great and the ugly.
« on: August 08, 2020, 01:43:08 PM »
Had a (good) day and was catching lots of fish but most of them were small with a handful of medium (keeper) fish. As the morning wound down the wind started to put a ripple on the water, so I tied on a buzzbait and made myself to fish it all the way back to the truck. Half way back there was an explosion (the great) and chaos ensued. I don't know if my heart can take many more of these fish out of the canoe, but I'll take that chance. When I got back to shore I threw my back out (the ugly) lifting the canoe over head. All worth it though.

The Hawg Forum / Who needs Mass anyway.
« on: August 06, 2020, 01:00:15 PM »
I fish mainly in N.E. Conn and N.W. RI and I'd say there are plenty of quality bass in both states. I went out this morning and absolutely smoked them, catching dozens of fish and would have had a 16 lb limit if I didn't lose a 4 1/2 at boat-side. Who needs Mass. @Brazzy

The Hawg Forum / Slump is over

After three weeks of no big fish, I decided to do some river fishing in the canoe and it payed off. I saw this fish coming from ten feet away and just stopped under my frog, two twitches and she unloaded on it. Fishing in a canoe in small rivers for jumbo bass is like organized chaos.

The Hawg Forum / Anyone catching big fish in this heat?
« on: July 27, 2020, 11:39:14 AM »
It seems the past week of heat, and probably this week has kept the big ones a little sluggish. I've been getting 6 to 12 fish most days but not many big ones. Anyone catching big fish in this heat?

The Hawg Forum / Cool nights = success
« on: July 18, 2020, 12:32:25 PM »
It seems the past three cool nights helped recharge the fish, they seemed eager to bite today on both frog and spinner, which was surprising with no wind. Fish were in 2 to 5 feet of water, I ended up with 32 bass but the best one was on the spinner.

The Hawg Forum / What would have been
« on: July 11, 2020, 01:46:09 PM »
Had a good day on the water catching 24 bass and one good one, but it would have been epic if I had netted the big one I had on. It was easily twice the size of the one pictured, it's mouth was as big as my face, but I lost her boat side in the pads. It's funny, you remember the biggest fish whether you catch them or not.

The Hawg Forum / Cold front curveball
« on: June 14, 2020, 01:25:12 PM »
With the cold front that passed through last night the fish were a little sluggish this morning. A friend and I scratched out a handful of fish early throwing a spinnerbait over shallow grass, then switched over to a deeper bank and burned a rat-l-trap with a slight pause with several fish in 30 minutes. When the wind calmed we went back to the spinner and closed out the day with 26 fish but only 2 were non-keepers.

The Hawg Forum / Don't trust the weather man
« on: June 05, 2020, 11:12:11 AM »
Thought this morning was going to be a wash out, with heavy rain and thunderstorms. Thankfully I never trust the weather man. With only light rain and wind, it made for great fishing conditions and cooperative fish. The fish at this body of water seemed to have spawned already, moving off the bank and setting up in the coontail. I did catch some smaller fish up against shallow cattails but the bigger ones were hanging around the first drop off.

The Hawg Forum / Just stuck with it=payoff
« on: June 03, 2020, 02:31:27 PM »
Started out slow this morning and threw swimbaits, frogs and buzzbaits with only a handful of fish. When the wind picked up I tried a full size spinnerbait and wasn't able to get a bite. Then I downsized to a smaller profile spinner and tried burning it just below the surface and it was game on. For some strange reason the fish would not hit a slow moving bait even though we've had two cold nights leading up to today but they crushed a fast bait. It was purely a reaction bite but I ended up with 16 bass including several quality fish. I guess I just had to stick with it.

The Hawg Forum / The ole switch-aroo
« on: May 23, 2020, 02:51:12 PM »
Luckily my buddy was able to pick me up with his truck today. We fished two ponds and the first was slow so we switched ponds and tripled our catch. Some times the ole switch-aroo is a good thing.

The Hawg Forum / Jon boat trailer?
« on: May 22, 2020, 03:09:48 PM »
If anyone has or knows of a Jon boat trailer for sale let me know. It seems most or all small trailer mfg companies have a 30 day back order due to the shut down, and yes I've looked everywhere.
