Title: Ice starting to thin out in southern RI
Post by: Bassaholic on March 25, 2015, 01:14:21 AM
Checked a few lakes and ponds today here in southern RI. Figured i would let people know whats going on down this way at least. This is as of 3/25/15

Chapmans pond- Small patch in the middle, like really small. but should open up quite a bit this week
Alton Pond- Almost 100% water a few floating patches of ice
Watchaug - 1 large open area of water/slush on right side of lake. Should progress this week and next
Locustville- Still locked up except for near the dam, small area of open water.

Ice seems to be getting thin down this way. Hopefully by the end of next week we should see water really starting to show!

Thanks for the update, @Bassaholic! That thin spot in the middle of Chapman's has been there for a while and I thought it might actually open up a little over a week ago, but then this recent cold snap hit and blew that theory away  ::)

I had also noticed that areas with moving water were finally opened up completely, hence the open water in Alton.

With rain and high 40s coming tomorrow and then some more 40s forecasted for next week, we should be getting there very soon. Looks like maybe this will be a Spring for having to bundle up to hit the water, but it still beats sitting in the house  ;)

Just came back from the dump and stopped at Chapmans.

Sun was strong and felt warm, the ice was doing some serious moaning!  The next few days should do some damage to the ice ;D

should be some serious deterioration of the ICE today with the rain and very warm temps. =)

@Bassaholic I drove by Chapman's Pond this morning and the dark area in the middle is getting much bigger now. Won't be long and the ice will be seriously breaking up!

Southwest winds later today and into tonight will also help.

Passed by Chapman's again about mid afternoon and the dark area in the middle was even bigger and looking like it was ready to open up any time now.

My guess is that it will open up overnight and we will have completely open water by the end of the weekend!

Good to hear. My guess is that there is current in Johnson's that helped break the ice up more quickly.

I hadn't heard that yet Joe. With Easter falling on the first Sunday of April this year, I was assuming that the tourney would be moved to the second Sunday of April. I would assume that Pachaug should be opened up before then. But you just never know with this crazy weather we're having.

I haven't heard anything about the tournament, but I drove to the boat launch today to check it out...frozen solid. Beach Pond isn't any better and Glasgo Pond was all ice a few days ago. I can't imagine it was much different today.

@edoubleu Glasgo still has water in it? It was supposed to be drained down to just about nothing for dam repairs.
Title: Re: Ice starting to thin out in southern RI
Post by: edoubleu on March 29, 2015, 09:07:57 PM
They drained about 75% of it in September but they let it slowly fill back up for some reason. I think it was back to normal before the end of last year. They were supposed to start repairs this spring. Not sure what the plan is now.

Well, after a little internet search, I found this. http://www.courant.com/reminder-news/norwich-edition/rnw-jc-griswold-state-postpones-glasgo-pond-drawdown-0116-20150112-story.html (http://www.courant.com/reminder-news/norwich-edition/rnw-jc-griswold-state-postpones-glasgo-pond-drawdown-0116-20150112-story.html)
Looks like this project is on hold, possibly until after Labor Day.

@edoubleu Thanks for the info. That's pretty odd for them to drain it that far down and then fill it back up again. Nothing like keeping the fish guessing!!

Watchaug is opened up about 30% but still frozen solid around the shoreline......Going to johnsons friday. Alot of people reporting fully open water at zekes bridge and above, with a few people already landing some bass.  :o :o

I drove by Chapman's late yesterday afternoon. The dark spot is back and getting pretty big, but still no open water anywhere at all.

I did notice, though, that Newton Marsh is about 75% opened up now.

It's gotta be soon.

Went down to Watchaug yesterday evening. about 70% open water. entire right side is opened up all the way to the back (from what i can see) the left side is pretty clear of ice till you hit the big cove on the left thats still ice, but its very thing. Shoreline is still locked up with about 1-2 inches of ice protruding out about 20 -30 feet. It will be ready to go by opening day for sure

Went by Indian Lake yesterday 3-31-15 and just a little ice around the launch area.  Would be hard to get a boat through but the rest of the lake is clear.  Can't wait, its coming soon!!!

This is Beach Pond yesterday afternoon. The cove down by the dam doesn't look any better. Hard to imagine the parade of trout-trollers are supposed to be out fishing next weekend. I imagine the state is kicking themselves for moving up opening day by a week.

You can barely get a vehicle through the ice dam on the launch.

And with the lakes still frozen, there has probably been very little trout stocking going on, except for the streams and rivers.

I checked Chapman's this afternoon and it was about 60% open!

The entire side of the pond near the old moose lodge is wide open. The area surrounding the boat ramp still had considerable amounts of ice though.

With the winds we had today, it did a great job of breaking it up, but it sure was stirred up and muddy!

I had a buddy who checked chapmans before dark today and he said the lake was about 80% open. Should be ready to go by the end of the weekend =)

Showers today. High winds tomorrow. Between the two, it should finish opening up the lakes that have already started opening up.

Not too sure about the lakes further north, where they're still almost 100% ice covered. There's also rain in next week's forecast, with temps in the 40s and 50s each day, so opening day should be safe to say that most, if not all, lakes will be opened up by then.

Things are looking good in CT! Just came back from some errands and stopped at a few lakes on the way.

Pachaug Pond - Boat launch and first long cove are open. Main body has huge sheets of ice still but breaking up quick. Wind and temps will help a lot today.

Glasgo Pond - Same thing as Pachaug Pond but the shoreline is opening up quick.

Beach Pond - Huge ice sheets but the wind today will do some serious damage to it. I went to the RI side beach and the ice sheets are getting blown in and they are piling up. Looks pretty cool actually.

Hopeville Pond - The main water has been open for over a week but the shady coves still had ice a few days ago.

To answer the questions concerning this year's Ice Breaker on Pachaug.........

The Ice Breaker is scheduled for April 12th. The permit has been approved by CT DEEP. We have been monitoring the ice conditions and have seen a great improvement over the Easter weekend. We plan on keeping an eye on it this week, and make a decision on Friday on whether to proceed or not.

We have flier's at Mike's Bait Shop and the Fish Connection for those interested. We will also be accepting registrations at the launch, provided that the ice conditions do not preclude the tourney.

I will make a post Friday night on these forums concerning the decision of whether we are moving forward with the tourney or not.

Member of Pachaug Area Bassmasters

Thanks @bumper022 I haven't fished it for several years now, but when I did so last, it was $100, if I remember correctly. $150 is a chunk of change for a local tourney.
Title: Re: Ice starting to thin out in southern RI
Post by: bumper022 on April 09, 2015, 08:40:04 AM
@190SCR  We provide complimentary donuts and coffee during registration, as well as pizza during the weigh in.

Based on a full field of 30 boats the prizes would be:
1st - $1500
2nd - $1025
3rd - $583
4th - $292
5th - $200

There is also an optional $10 per boat lunker pool.

@Curt - RI  I spoke to a couple of our members that have been with the club a while. They state that the higher entry was requested by a lot of the folks that routinely participate.
Title: Re: Ice starting to thin out in southern RI
Post by: Curt - RI on April 09, 2015, 09:10:48 AM
@bumper022 Thanks for the info.

I noticed that the limit is now 30 boats. I believe it used to be 40 or 50, which explains the higher entry fee. People probably wanted a higher payout, so they said they were willing to pay the higher entry fee.
Title: Re: Ice starting to thin out in southern RI
Post by: bumper022 on April 09, 2015, 09:41:52 AM
Yes, when it was 50 boats the parking at Pachaug was a mess, with many trailers parking on the grass which CT DEEP griped about. We had to find offsite parking for overflow and run a shuttle between the launch and offsite parking. Made things a little too complicated.

50 is a lot of boats for Patchaug!  More room to fish with 30 and less headaches for the people running it 8)

I don't have the full results with me....but here's the gist from Pachaug.....

16 boats. Water temp was 44 - 48 in morning, moving to 55 in shallows in afternoon.

8 teams were skunked. Top bag was just under 18 lbs. Lunker was 5.7 lbs.
