The Hawg Forum / Turned Wooden/Plastic Lures
« on: December 26, 2017, 09:41:43 AM »
Hi guys, Hope you all had a great Christmas yesterday, and hoping for you all to have a great end and start of your year.

With all of my handmade Christmas presents soon coming to an end, I would like to start turning some lures on my lathe, and in the future offering them for sale. I have made a few topwater spooks, poppers, and one version of the MS Slammer that seem to work pretty well, but I would like to get into some more designs and shapes. Just figured I would post this here to see if any of you guys had any Ideas on shapes, sizes, blades, rattle Vs. no rattle etc. I havent really ventured into the topwater and big swimbait game as of yet, so I am a rookie when it comes to this sort of thing.

I will turn these out of Southern yellow pine, which is a harder softwood then say white or sugar pine. Also is very buoyant but can be weighted down with solder. I also have access to some HDPE (the same plastic that milk jugs and buckets are made out of) which I can easily turn with regular turning tools.

Thank you guys!

The Hawg Forum / Post Storm and Cold Front
« on: September 29, 2017, 06:52:13 PM »
Hey guys. Fishing a tournement at Echo Lake Sunday and I have a question about fishing when its post storm and cold front. As the temperture and humidity drop today, and the rain coming tomorrow, this could be a tough tournement. I have read alot of stuff on post front fishing, like targeting isolated cover, points, rock piles etc. And also Rip Rap, but that is usually what your fishing in when you are fishing on a point right?

Im kind of going in blind on the post frontal conditions, but I have fished Echo a couple times now, so I know where fish are, just dont really know if I should downsize baits, slow roll spinnerbaits/chatterbaits or slow down everything. Thank you for any advice you can give me!

The Hawg Forum / Early March fishing?
« on: March 04, 2017, 08:42:50 PM »
So I've been pretty idle on the forum for a while, I am attending a wooden boat building school called the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) in Newport RI and it takes up a whole bunch of my time. I have been popping in and reading new topics. Anyways, I have this upcoming week off of school and I was hoping to do some much needed fishing mid week when the temp is up in the 50's. I know this cold snap isn't going to help much, but I need some time at the waters edge. Just curious what you guys would throw so early in the season? I know about dragging grubs and senkos, and even slow rolling a spinnerbait, but anything else I should try? try? Thanks!

« on: August 29, 2016, 09:05:47 PM »
Hey everyone. Need some help. The past 5 times I have been out I have only caught 4 small fish, and got skunked twice. Been throwing Watermelon red flake and green pumpkin senkos, Silver and black lipless crank, Green white and black spinnerbait, and a chartreuse and white spinnerbait. Also threw a couple jigs I have but I have never had any luck with them. Need some help to get me on some fish! Thanks a bunch.

Even threw on a watermelon red flake yum dinger figuring what the heck cant get any worse! I need some help with baits to throw now into the spawn. This is pretty much the first time ive spring fished for bass. Thank you!!

The Hawg Forum / Warmer Weather? Hopefully!
« on: February 15, 2016, 08:48:03 PM »
Looking like a warmer week this week coming up averaging in the 40's here in rhode island. Hopefully this rain tonight will melt away some of this snow and the ice on the water and we can get out on the water by march! Cannot wait to get my feet on the waters edge and fish! And not freeze doing so.

The Hawg Forum / Fall bait recommendations
« on: October 04, 2015, 08:36:24 PM »
So ive been getting pretty much skunked with the weather cooling down. I lost a nice lipless crankbait that i caught 2 within the matter of 10 minutes and caught a 2 1/2 pound yesterday off a square bill both bluegillish patterns which I also lost to the notorious weed fish  >:( . I just ordered a couple packs of soft plastic swim baits and some jigs but I would like to know what else I should throw for the cooler temps? Thanks alot!

Fishing Tackle & Equipment Reviews / In need of a baitcasting rod under $100
« on: September 19, 2015, 02:29:16 PM »
Any recommendations on a baitcaster under $100? I love my ugly stik, but I really would like a baitcaster for fishing densely weeded areas. Also, nobody makes the left handed reels with a baitcaster? I grew up reeling with my left hand. Call me weird but I also shoot a gun and shoot pool with my left hand! Thanks in advance

Hi everybody. My name is Matt, I'm 18 and I live in Charlestown Rhode Island. I am new to Largemouth bass fishing and I would like to broaden my horizons on spots too fish and what lures to throw at that spot. I have a canoe with a trolling motor so I can go some places but not all. I like bank fishing the best though. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks alot!
