Title: Pickerel, or lack thereof
Post by: Cranstonfisher92 on June 03, 2021, 11:08:46 AM
Anyone else noticing a drop-off in pickerel bites this year? In years past at all of my usual haunts they start biting in very late winter before the bass even start caring. This year I've caught one lethargic one in all my trips since Feb, otherwise they're not going after anything live or lure. Maybe the great overfish of 2020 knocked a dent in the local population with the extra pressure and rise in newer anglers mishandling/injuring/killing them?

No drop off in the southern part of the state!  Some ponds are getting overrun with them.

Earlier this year I didn't catch many. I haven't been catching a ton at different bodies of water. Indian lake this year, I was there once this year, and normally you don't find many there and I caught 15 in one 6hr tourney. A lake in CT I fished for a tourney I stopped counting after 15 pickerel. I must have caught over 20. Its been weird though for sure. Its like different lakes for me are firing on all cylinders for pickerel and some of the other ones they aren't awake.

Us spinnerbait guys tend to attract them! I found they like the frog a lot though too

Wordens and Chapman are loaded with them.

A decline in the Pickerel population would be a good thing in most lakes, in my opinion. They breed like rabbits and overtake shallow lakes in a matter of just a few years.
