I spotted frozen areas yesterday morning in a local swamp.

I know they will likely thaw out over the next few days, but it tells me that the water temps in the the extremely shallow areas are hanging in the low 30s.

Chapmans looked like there was some skim ice yesterday when i drove by.   I guess a few nights in the 20's will do it

No doubt! There was still some ice left in the sheltered areas of the swamp when I drove by this afternoon, but the areas in the open sun were open again.

Either way, we know that the water is cold 

The 10 day forecast shows only 1 day with highs in the 30s, so this should fend off any further ice until at least Christmas time. Let's see what happens after that

Small, shallow lakes and swampy areas are 100% iced in as of yesterday. Today and tomorrow will be cloudy and in the 40s, so not sure how that will affect it. But it's safe to say that the water temps are cold

I drove by Chapman Pond today in Westerly.

The lake was largely covered with ice and snow, but there were a few dark spots where it was either wet, or possibly still partially open here and there.

Based on the forecast for the next 10 days, it won't be thawing anytime soon

And i haven't seen anybody on Chapmans yet this year. Hasn't really frozen up solid yet!

I sure hope not, Joe. But it's starting to look like an early thaw is unlikely.

Plenty of people ice fishing on Chapman Pond today.

I can imagine that many lakes in RI & CT are also seeing lots of similar activity.

I knew this rain would put a hurt on the ice!

The rest of this week should put an end to it completely

I didn't have a chance to get out anywhere today, but I believe the damage is probably done to the ice that will keep it melting now.


We should have open water in the south end of RI by the end of the week.

Lot of open water on Chapmans today. Still a good amount of crappy looking ice but you could launch if you wanted!

We didn't get any ice again this year. 80 degrees today, sorry guys...
