Opening Day?
« on: March 19, 2020, 11:07:20 AM »
With everything pretty much shut down i wonder if the state would consider cancelling opening day?
Some places attract hundreds of people that are fishing elbow to elbow!

This virus is taking a toll and i think it's only the beginning  :P

Thats a thought. Especially places like Carolina Trout Pond, that place you can barely cast on opening day. I guess that would be the best way is closing all trout fishing for opening day. Kind of stinks for us bass guys if they don't open trout lakes, but luckily a lot of the lakes that are big enough for bass boats aren't stocked with trout.

I've been wondering about the lakes in general. Personally, I don't see how or why they would close them to anglers, since we are in boats, not congregating in large groups on the shore. It will be interesting.  :hmm:

o Opening Day of the trout-fishing season will not occur on its traditional date, which in a normal year would occur Saturday, April 11. DEM is still working out a plan to modify Opening Day. As soon as we have a plan in place, we will announce it.  -_-

@Zero Thanks for sharing this. RI should have just done what CT did. Now they will have a debacle on their hands

Yep, they blew it!

I'm hoping that we will just be able to fish. All beaches and state parks are closing Friday.  I would think that means Watchaug will be closed ?

@Joe P , that's a good question. But since the boat launch isn't part of the park, it just might still be open.

On another note, I got word from RI DEM today that all April tourneys are canceled.

It's not real clear.  They said all parking areas will be closed, would think the ramp area is included?

I believe the parking areas they referred to were those for the state parks and beaches. But to be sure, I have called Burlingame State Park and left them a message. I will wait and see if they call me back or not with more info.

No callback from Burlingame yet. Not surprising.

Some Info about fishing in general:

Q: Are State Management Areas Still Open?
A: Yes. Management areas remain open for the time being, but this is a situation that DEM will be monitoring very closely. We ask all Rhode Islanders to abide by local and state stay-at-home orders, and limit travel whenever possible, even for approved recreation activities. If you do go to a refuge, preserve, management area or other open spaces, and see that parking is limited or lots are full, you should change your plans and take your walk back home. Given the serious nature of COVID-19, DEM will continue to provide any needed updates regarding changes to this guidance.

Q: Are Non-Trout Waters Open?
Yes. Rivers, lakes, and ponds that are not stocked with trout are open for fishing year-round. This includes most of freshwater areas in Rhode Island. During this time of social distancing, fishing should be enjoyed as solitary experience or with members of your immediate household, not as a group activity. Click for a map of trout-stock waters visit.

Q. Are DEM Boat Ramps Open?
Yes, excluding ramps located within state parks that remain closed until further notice. Outdoor activities, including boating, are a great way to relax and enjoy nature. However, please remember that social distancing guidelines still apply. All boaters are encouraged to consider the size of the vessel, the number of people on board, and the ability of people to stay six or more feet apart. As a reminder: when on the water, personal flotation devices should always be worn.
