Ice Conditions - 2017-2018

I drove by Chapman Pond in Westerly today and noticed that the lake had about 60-70% ice cover  :o

I didn't think anything would be freezing up yet with the wind we've been having, especially open water. If the wind hadn't blown these last 36 hours, it would have been frozen from shore to shore.

Small areas, like swamps and other sheltered spots are 100% frozen now.

Winter is definitely here now  :yes: :crying:

With the warmer weather and rain we had, Chapman started to look like it might open up, at least partially. But this new cold snap will put an end to that  :crying:

This week looks like it's shaping up to be brutal, with most days not getting out of the 20s, and others not even getting out of the teens  :o I would say it would be pretty safe to assume that ice fishing will be well underway soon just about everywhere.

I don't ice fish, though, so I will hibernate and wait for Spring to get here  :yes:

The next 2 weeks look to be brutally cold, there'll bee ice for sure! 

Also a possible Nor'easter this weekend. one model shows us getting it and another has it going out to sea.  Hopefully it goes out to sea 8)

It looks very cold all week. Lots of ice very soon. I wouldn't think any of it will be safe for some time. If and when anyone does go out ice fishing. Be safe!

A week or so ago a guy went missing at Patchaug, he was driving a snowmobile on 2" of ice :o   They found the sled sitting a hump that was out of the water, dont think they found him yet :P

People do some crazy stuff on ice. I have seen videos of people skimming across water on snowmobiles, but doing it on thin ice when nobody else is around to help if you run into trouble is a bad idea.

I hope they find his body before Spring time  :yes:

Chapman Pond is completely iced in from what I can see. The ice is also not black, but gray. So it's gotten fairly thick pretty quickly.

I still don't know if it's safe or not, so please use caution if you decide to venture out onto it.  :yes:
