Fall bait recommendations
« on: October 04, 2015, 08:36:24 PM »
So ive been getting pretty much skunked with the weather cooling down. I lost a nice lipless crankbait that i caught 2 within the matter of 10 minutes and caught a 2 1/2 pound yesterday off a square bill both bluegillish patterns which I also lost to the notorious weed fish  >:( . I just ordered a couple packs of soft plastic swim baits and some jigs but I would like to know what else I should throw for the cooler temps? Thanks alot!
I make baits, so when I fish, I am product testing! And when I am not using baits I make, I am researching.

Spinnerbaits can be pretty effective this time of year! Lipless crankbaits also work well.

The weather this time of year can be pretty up and down, with cold fronts and rain moving through pretty regularly. There will be days when they'll wear a spinnerbait out and then there will be days when you'll need to slow down and fish jigs or similar baits. Let the fish tell you what they want, and don't be afraid to experiment  ;)

Thank you both for the recommendations! Should I put some sort of soft plastic on the back of the jig and the spinner? also colors, should I just stick with the regular blacks, browns and greens?

I usually fish pork on the back of my jigs. Big Uncle Josh #1 pork frogs in Black, usually paired with a black & blue jig.

For spinnerbaits, I usually slide a white 4 inch twintail grub on the hook for a little extra bulk and action.

Fished North Pond in the Belgrades and had an awesome day burning spinnerbait (white with white willows)  on Friday. Smallies in  4-5 feet. Saturday couldn't buy a fish on that pattern. Ended up dropping on fish in 11-12 feet of water. Fish were in both places both days but the shallow fish wouldn't chase.
