Open Water Reports
« on: February 24, 2011, 02:56:21 PM »
Well gang, as we get close to the end of February it's time to start posting reports of open water wherever we happen to see it.

As of today here in Southern RI everything is still frozen over. I went out for a bit this afternoon and noticed that one of the swamps near my house is starting to show some very tiny spots that are melting.

Chapman's Pond is still 100% frozen over with safe ice. I know it's still safe because there were still several people out there ice fishing when I drove by at about 2:30 PM.

We've got a ways to go yet, but the warm temps, rain and South/Southwest wind tomorrow should move us in the right direction and be the beginning of the end for the ice this year  :D

Tiogue is starting to melt and does not look safe at all. The other day when I was driving by it on the Arnold Rd side there was a person that was casting his line into an area that had no ice and very little open water. So we are def moving in the right direction. So far this has been a nice slow melt of all the snow and I am actually looking forward to some of the rain and 50+ degree temps to help melt the rest of the snow away.
Don't let that stinking bass get away!!!!!

Yep.. tomorrow is supposed to be 50 and windy with downpours and gusts up to 45 MPH, which should do some damage to the ice for sure.

Good idea with this thread! I will post when i see any open water here in northeastern CT and central MA.
I went by webster lake today in MA and didn't see any signs of open water, I'm pretty sure the ice is still quite thick rite now but with enough rain and some warmer sunny days, hopefully we will see some open water soon!

It's actually nice to see the curb lines along the streets.

I went by a res along rte 128 in the Waltham stretch and the top layer of ice on the res was a pond of water. A few warm days should open that up...Oh did I mention, that's off limits to fishing... ::)

I havn't seen it for myself, but i was reading on a different fishing forum site that theres a lot of small ponds on the cape that are completely thawed and mashpee/wakeby is 75% open. The guy said they should all be open by this weekend. Just thought i'd post it up so if anyone wants to make a weekend trip to shake the winter cabin fever. But i'm only going by what i read on  MAfishfinder.com

Ice was well over a foot thick on Stump pond this past Saturday so I think we still have a while to go.
I fish therefore I lie.

Wordens is down to 7 - 8 inches after the rains, thats a little more encouraging  :D

Now if we could just get a couple of warm days ???

Looks like cold for tomorrow and Friday then 50 and showers over the weekend. Maybe we'll see open water by mid March... maybe later :(
