Trailer Inspections???
« on: May 17, 2004, 01:18:58 PM »
Not sure if i should have put this on the boat forum or not but here goes.

I was leaving Chapmans Pond today and the state had a check point set up on rt 91.
Of course i get waved to pull over, a guy comes up to the window and asks why was i pulled over, geez, like i know.  He says must be the trailer, is it inspected?  Huh, inspected... I ask inspected for what ?
He says all trailers rated for over 1000 lbs need to be inspected every year. I said i never heard of that before and he says... yeah, no one knows about it, thats just what i wanted to hear >:(
So i get a five day repair ticket to get my trailer inspected or loose my registration, not a good day....

Anybody here know about this law?

geez... news to me too, Joe! Never heard of it. And as far as I am concerned I have still never heard of it  ;D

So where do you have to go to get a trailer inspected anyway??

Let us know how you make out with this one.

The nice part was the guy had no clue where to get a trailer inspected. He said i'll give you a phone number to call, thanks buddy. Luckily a woman that was working with him mentioned Rocko's repair shop, i'm going to call now....

Rocco's is on Ledward Ave. in Westerly. I used to work for him when his repair business was at his house!

This is getting worse by the minute. Most stations in town will not do a trailer and the one station i found that will does not have any stickers and even he said he has never inspected a trailer before.

This State sure is money hungry >:(

If a trailer inspection station has never inspected a trailer before, I guess nobody else seems to know that this law even exists either!!

What a pain in the butt  :(

Are you sure that this is a RI law? I would bet its not. I think I would tell the cop that the sticker is on my other boats windsheild!  ::)  Sounds like a stupid law to me.  I would fight it. But thats just me! I like to do that. Let us know how you make out. Good Luck.

Bob, it wasn't a cop that gave me the ticket it was state workers that set up a road block. And after searching the web it is in writing on the motor vehicle web site, see link below.

This sucks.....

That's good, Joe  :D

I am assuming that they check things like tires, lights and brakes (if you have them). Do they also check the structural integrity of the trailer??

The gentleman that did the inspection was impressed with the condition of my boat and trailer and just checked the lights and tires. He did not check the brakes, good thing because they don't work ;)

Does anyone know if this pertains to new trailers or after a certain age..like new truck do not need a sticker for the first year[unless you get tired of being pulled over for not having one]

I just checked the RI motor vehicles web site and it's not clear about new trailers. I would assume it falls under the same guidelines as an automobile....

Do you have a delivery date yet for that Triton?
