General Non-Fishing Chatter / 18 - Three Days in a Row!
« on: January 19, 2018, 09:50:19 AM »
Three mornings in a row the temp has been 18. Some seriously consistent temps!!

With that said, it also means that the ice is still getting thicker, not thinner  :crying:

One thing's for sure. all of this ice will hang a number on heavy weeds and lay them down for a while

Fishing Tackle & Equipment Reviews / Lew's Carbon Fire Rod
« on: January 10, 2018, 10:24:22 AM »
I picked up a new Lew's Carbon Fire rod at Dick's Sporting Goods a few weeks ago. I had never seen them before, but when I picked it up the first thing I noticed was that it felt like a feather in my hand. Super light!

It's a 6' 10" medium action that I will be playing with, to see what suits it best with regard to lures, techniques, etc. Right now I'm thinking it might make a good Senko rod, for the 5 and 6 inch baits fished weightless. Won't know for sure until I actually get on the water with it.

Once I get to spend dome time actually using it, I will post an update here to give my feedback.

The Hawg Forum / Heat Wave Coming!
« on: January 06, 2018, 02:27:42 PM »
Well, after being battered by extreme cold, a potential new record low temperature tonight, and a major Nor' Easter, it looks like we'll be catching a break next week!

Not sure if it's a January thaw, or just a general change in the weather trends. But, either way, next week is looking like 30s and 40s all week! They're even hinting at a slight possibility of breaking the 50 degree mark on Friday  :o

Not sure yet how much of it will actually happen, but at least it gives us a glimmer of hope of getting some weather that's a bit more "normal".

Personally, I'm looking forward to it.

Ice Conditions / Ice Conditions - 2017-2018
« on: December 14, 2017, 04:29:46 PM »
I drove by Chapman Pond in Westerly today and noticed that the lake had about 60-70% ice cover  :o

I didn't think anything would be freezing up yet with the wind we've been having, especially open water. If the wind hadn't blown these last 36 hours, it would have been frozen from shore to shore.

Small areas, like swamps and other sheltered spots are 100% frozen now.

Winter is definitely here now  :crying:

Looks like we might be getting our first measurable snow tomorrow  ::)

They're talking 3-6 inches here in RI. We'll see...

The Hawg Forum / Snow This Morning
« on: November 20, 2017, 11:06:31 AM »
Not sure about other areas, but here in southern RI I woke up to a light dusting of snow this morning

It wasn't really measurable, but it was enough to let us know that Winter is knocking on our door  :crying:

The Hawg Forum / Amos Lake Tourney Update
« on: October 11, 2017, 02:32:48 PM »
Well gang, after giving it a lot of thought, I have decided that this year's NEbass Amos Lake tourney was the last one.

I have way more on my plate than I used to, and trying to run this tourney is just one more thing that takes up my time.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in it, and to those who have helped me over the years by donating stuff for prizes, etc. I truly appreciate it.

Fishing Photos Forum / Still Night Fishing!
« on: October 10, 2017, 10:52:23 AM »
With all of the warm weather this fall, I am still managing to get out at night and catch some bass!
Caught this one Saturday night, in CT. Not a monster, but a respectable fish that pulled like a freight train

Hopefully I can get one more night trip before it gets cold.
