The Spawn is Over
« on: May 22, 2017, 09:52:50 AM »
Not sure about the northern parts of New England, but here in Southern RI it appears that the spawn is over as fast as it began.

I fished Chapman Pond Saturday afternoon and found empty beds everywhere. Water temp was at 70 degrees there already.

I also fished at Watchaug yesterday for a few hours, and the water temperature there was also pushing high 60s in most areas.

So we waited a long time for it to happen, and then it happened almost overnight

But it's behind us now, so maybe the fish will begin to settle into their summer habits very soon. Now if only the weather would settle down, we'd be all set  :hmm:

Really didn't see any beds this weekend at Wilsons. Maybe a few at most.
I fish therefore I lie.

Fished a pond in northern RI this weekend and had on a 5 plus that definitely was still fat with eggs. Also mother nature always protects her own. If the conditions weren't optimum in May, there could be a smaller spawn in June. I've caught fish off beds in mid June in RI.

Definitely. Doesn't happen often, but I've seen it too

Thanks for the info!

That would make perfect sense being that much further North. Especially in those deeper, clear lakes that take longer to warm up anyway

Was at Pachaug  Wednesday afternoon  31 may, fish still on beds water temps 64-68, Amos today in the afternoon well over a dozen beds had males guarding beds and about 8 more beds with both the male and female present, temps 65-67. Indian also has many active bedding fish as of today. Caught bedding fish last Sunday 28 May at Roger Williams park  also the spawn has been going on since the first heat wave. it has been slow and drawn out this year. due to the slow to rise water temperatures. I have yet to see many sunfish bedding areas yet so that also tells me the bass spawn is not yet over too. The fish this year have been very skiddish  and leave the beds and don't stick around as a boat approaches and  for most inexperienced anglers they think the beds are old and or finished. just not so. Last Saturday 27 May all our  fish in the tournament were bed fish .
Men and fish are alike, they both get in trouble when they open their mouths...

My post should have been titled slightly different. My observation was based on Chapman Pond, which is extremely shallow. So the fish there will usually move in and spawn sooner than most other lakes.

You're right when it comes to the spawn being long and drawn out because of the weather.

People not spotting fish on beds may or may not be due to lack of experience. But it also might be due to lack of trying to find fish on beds.  ;)

I saw a nice sized bass on a bed today.

I pushed him off a couple of times but he went right back on it. He's a little late to the party ;D

This weather and the water temperature fluctuations are nuts this year
